Diversionary Tactics

Last night, my family shared a very strange dinner. Since I had a meeting with Asia Pac at 8:30 p.m. and I usually don't get home until after 6:30 p.m., we had to find something quick to eat, especially after The Kitten threw a 15-minute fit because we weren't going to "Old Mcdonald's" or Willie's. We had decided on Mexican, and even though I don't like it, we went to the closest establishment of this type to our house.

First, we had to make somebody come take our order, and then he came back five minutes later and took it again. Not a good sign, but everything came out ok. I was almost done with my enchiladas when I saw something move in the corner of my eye, and before I could get my camera out to take a picture of the roach walking across the wall, the waiter came up and squashed it with a napkin. Okaaaay. You would have thought he could have comped our food for that, but no. While we were waiting an eternity for the check, I started hearing something that sounded like a real kitten. I kept looking around, but nobody else seemed to notice, and although my husband admitted to hearing the sound, he thought I was crazy for caring. Hello, I just shared dinner with a roach, and there is a kitten somewhere in this restaurant! Yeah, I'm crazy.

So, we never figured out where the kitten was, and we paid way too much for nausea from the unwanted dinner guests, but really I just told this story to take some of the spotlight off this interview I gave to a derby fan who posted today. Man, I'm good.

Hitting a Car was the Highlight of My Week

Last Monday, I floated the Comal River like a rookie. Maybe it was because it was The Kitten's first time to float the river, and I was a little nervous, hoping she would love tubing as much as I do. Maybe it was a bit of showing off in front of my cousins on my dad's side who all are younger than me. Maybe it was way too much cider. But anyway, I fried my legs for the first time in twenty years. And not just fried all over...burned in a candy-cane pattern. Yes, I have red and white diagonal stripes up and down the fronts of my legs. Lovely!

Still, my candy-cane legs can't top the marks I received from skating the Pride Parade Saturday night. Before the parade even started, I hit a car. Poor car! It was just minding its own business, and I came along and tripped into it. It was too dark to see how bad my Catazonianess damaged it, but the bruise on my upper arm says there might have been a dent in the passenger door. The bruise is even bigger than the one when I fell in the clothes hamper, which you can actually see in the picture on my Blogger profile. Nice!

By the way, I'm waiting to see pictures from that night, so if you have any of the roller derby girls rolling down Westheimer, either on wheels or on the ground wrastling, put 'em out there! And thanks, Rushin' Cleavage, for such an enjoyable evening. ;)

I didn't think the week could get any better than once again getting the crap beat out of me by stationary objects, but then I went to a Roger Creager concert yesterday evening, right smack-dab in the middle of what I like to think of as my old 'hood (Oak Forest), and I know it's hard to believe that only about 75-100 people would brave the heat wave from hell to see him at such a great venue (a little league ballfield), but the few, the brave, the crazy were rewarded with a free beer from Roger himself. Awesome.

Catazon's Law of Parties

Stress will be a fact of life the week before the party, until you can drink it away the night of the party.

On Monday, the guest of honor will still be hemming and hawing over the menu. That's ok, because you're still not sure if you have to feed forty or fifty or even more.

On Tuesday, you will start the day by throwing out your neck...the same neck problem you have had since a crazy night in New Orleans in 2005. You still don't know what it is, and at the moment, you definitely don't have time to find out, although it would be nice to refresh your stash of painkillers.

On Wednesday, you will discover a water leak in your dining room ceiling. Thank God the pipe was right next to a light fixture, so the water dripped immediately instead of pooling for days. Later that day, you will have your annual performance review. Good luck!

On Thursday, you will have to go to dinner with your boss. Actually not a stressful situation, but you should be home doing a test run on the last minute request for butterscotch cake. Even though it might look like a pile of poo on Saturday, you're still pretty sure it will taste totally awesome (it's an 80's party).

You're not going to think about Friday yet. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Is This Year Over Yet?

It feels like 2008 lasted FOREVER, and I still have a few more hours of work and a couple of days to get through. In 2008, I sent The Kitten to Kindergarten, started a dream job, laid on my deathbed twice, broke my toes three times, derbied across the country until I had to give up for good, and made an effort to eat better so I will never weigh more than 200 pounds (again).

I'm ignoring whatever weight I gained after spending a weekend in the "country"...you remember the country? I had to drink a couple of six packs of Bacardi Mojitos to survive. Nothing my 4:45-in-the-morning, every-other-day-because-it's-so-damn-intense, 30-minute-calisthenic-workout-from-hell can't fix.

I normally don't make resolutions, but one of my friends is so gung-ho about it, she really gets me in the mood. In 2009, I'm going to enjoy the last full year of my thirties by just relaxing because I spent most of the past decade chasing dreams and The Kitten. I'm going to need the rest for my forties if the way I'm only getting better with age is any indication. Also, I think I've worked up the nerve to stop ignoring Twitter. I can look at it one of two ways...either I'm already breaking the relaxing resolution, or I'm going to have plenty of time to play now that I'm relaxing.

Day of the Dead Can't Come Soon Enough

October has been a CRAZY BUSY month for me.

I began the month by skating in my last derby bout. In the first of three bouts in two days, I was tripped and took it directly on my right knee (the one that already had problems). At least I pushed their jammer all the way to the middle of the infield with three of their blockers on me right before this happened. You can watch the whole bout if you want. Such a shame opponents must resort to cheating to stop me. Still, I can't believe I could get a pad over my knee to skate the other two bouts. Isn't it symbolic, don't you think?

Catazon Falling on Knee

A week or so later, I saw a legend from the front row, thanks to a derby girl who I'm proud to call a friend also. You couldn't ask for a better front (or back, or only two) of your pack. We've been through it all!

Starr Doom and Catazon in our last game together

Then, I went to the Corral Club Halloween Party, two days before the derby awards party, and wore the same thing to each. Hmm, maybe that's why I went to both alone...it couldn't be because I'm a nasty dancer...no way. (Image is blurred to protect the innocent, or because I had to steal it from Facebook on my BlackBerry...whatever you prefer.)

Catazon Nasty Dancing

Last weekend, I acted like a giddy schoolgirl on the front row of another concert, this time with my sister who took some great pictures. I think I'm going to have to fight her for his sweat towel that I practically jumped up on the stage to steal. You can't ignore me, Rick!

Rick Looking Up

And all these things don't even begin to list all the fun I had in October! Tonight, The Kitten will get to show off her costume to the grandparents she invited over for Halloween almost two months ago. Tomorrow, I can start a much more relaxed month. Unless somebody wants to go to the Ren Faire with me?

Only I...

would have a car that astounds the Hyundai dealership with its mechanical issues. Only I could break a car so much that the service department admits to never having seen anything like it. Only I would pay almost as much to get it fixed as I owe on the car. Only I could still love that dinged-up, broken-down car.

Be Careful What You Wish...

or if you are me, be careful what you talk about. Before the bout Saturday night, I talked about how I am prone to having accidents at home and how I wanted one of our pets to die. Both of those things happened on Sunday. I broke my right pinkie toe again, and I found the psycho hamster dead in her cage. Spooky.

I don't remember talking about winning the bout, but we did anyway. Yay! Come watch HaRD Knocks win again this Saturday...same Cat time, same Cat channel.

Free Lessons in Destructive Criticism

I was waiting for a picture of me, with glowing eyes, actually jumping on the back of a poor, innocent opposing skater, but Death By Chocolate commented me with this lolcat gem that just hit the spot:

Humorous Pictures

I was ejected from the Brawlers' amazing victory over ACRD's Bombshell Brigade for fighting. I decided to take matters into my own hands when one of their skaters decided to block me with an elbow from out of bounds completely around the rink. Maybe constructive feedback would have stopped at jumping on her back, but I guess the stressful week of derby I had just lived through convinced me to take a few jabs at her face after ripping her helmet off. I crossed the line into destructive. At least my team didn't self-destruct.

Sunday night was a crowd-pleaser, and boy, did HRD need one. The home team worked on a slight blowout (Brawlers 123, Brigade 100), and the underdog won the second bout by one point (Betties 77, Sirens 76). The fans raved over the showmanship and the suspense. My ego loves it when the fans rave.

Then Monday morning comes bright and early as it always does after bout nights, and Sharon Stone couldn't have asked for a better example of karma. When your shower caddy falls and leaves a six-inch contusion on your calf muscle after your fist put a knot the size of a quarter on a derby girl's forehead...now that's karma. You should have seen what I did to that caddy. Beware of the Catazon, inanimate objects and sloppy skaters!

Can't Keep It Inside Any Longer...

I hate rope lights.

That's what you get when a sick and tired mind is coming upon its 48th hour of "work" this week.

I Think I'm Entitled...

to bitch about working 13 hours straight on a Monday after spending Sunday abusing my body. You know that freaky bone that sticks out on the top of my foot (and if you don't know, it's not an injury, it's done that all my life)???...somehow that got scraped through my leather skate and two socks. What I wouldn't give right now with 30 minutes left of my voluntary prison in this god-forsaken library to be 24 hours in the past, putting more scrapes on my freaky bones.

Central Texas - Heaven or Hell?

Five reasons why Central Texas is heaven on earth:

1. my favorite barbecue establishment
2. my favorite place for queso and CHEAP margaritas
3. my favorite place for a nice view and EXPENSIVE margaritas
4. the birthplace of modern-day roller derby
5. my favorite place to just BE in the whole wide world

None of these places will be visited on my trip to Central Texas this weekend; therefore, I might as well be in hell! I will be staying in a farmhouse built in the 1930's or 40's (I can't remember, but I know it was a long, stinky-ass time ago). I will have to share a bathroom with my in-laws. I will be surrounded by country folk that didn't understand why I kept playing tackle football after I broke myself, so they most certainly can't understand why I keep "rollerblading" after breaking myself again. I will be forced to eat vegetables with the yummy bonus flavor of bacon, if there is any room for vegetables at all. I will miss two derby practices. I can't wait to get back home to start on all the things I should have been doing this weekend to prepare for The Kitten's 4th birthday next week.

The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.

Remind Me Why I Play Roller Derby Again?

I mean, really.

I can put bigger bruises on my body by falling into my dirty clothes hamper than the rest of the league can by trying to take me down. Yes, I tripped over my pants and fell into the dirty clothes hamper last night, and yes, my arm hurts.

Most people laugh with me when I make a joke, but my derby sisters take everything a bit too seriously. Can anyone imagine Catazon "walking it out" in front of 1500 people? Revisit the first paragraph if you need some inspiration. Not gonna happen.

A former student came into the library yesterday to tell me that when she sat through x-rays and CAT scans after being thrown from a horse last week and listened to everyone asking her if she would ever get back on a horse again, she thought of me. Yes, she will get back on a horse again. OK, I guess that's a good enough reason.

What Are You Hiding Under Your Sk*rt?

Last year, I enjoyed an extraordinary season with the Burlesque Brawlers of the Houston Roller Derby. Sometimes I would jam back-to-back and get lead jammer both times. Sometimes I would send the opposing jammer into the crowd and skate away. Sometimes my eyes would glow, and girls would just fall down. Well, that last one might be an exaggeration...

When I was excited about my performance, I would share my excitement with the crowd by showing them what I was hiding under my skirt.
MEOW!
Ah, yes...the Meow Butt. It became something so much more than a cheeky gimmick. Wasn't long before the announcers would start calling it out before I could even flash it. Many people made me smile through my injuries by just saying, "Meowch!" Really, I just hope I inspired others to quit taking themselves so seriously, because God knows I started having a lot more fun when I learned how to laugh at myself.

Why am I sharing this today? This was posted as a way to promote a new website called sk*rt. I can win a bunch of cool stuff if you go over there and vote for me. You can do a revealing post, too, and I'll vote for you!

My Ankle Feels Great!

Well, besides the tenderness of the incisions...

I didn't limp when I got out of bed this morning. I can't believe I can already tell a difference with the metal out of my body. I hinted that I might be able to skate a couple of jams in the May bout, and Doc was not buying it. I think I'll listen to him and wait.

In semi-related news, you know your job sucks when you come in on a Saturday after having surgery on Wednesday, and you have an email from your boss who knew you were having surgery on Wednesday, but sent you an email that day anyway asking if you were going to be here on Saturday. Can I shoot the bitch now? Since I can't hip-check her ass into the cheap seats until June? Please...

How to Have Fun after Surgery

I've found the perfect way to make the time fly by...watch videos of the most gruesome sports injuries! Conveniently, someone dugg this story on SI.com today. While Sports Illustrated provided only ten links, there are plenty of extra links in the comments at digg and at the bottom of the SI article.

Once again, you have to listen to me complain about the fact that there is no evidence of Catazon's ankle flopping around anywhere out there! What is wrong with you roller derby fans? Don't you know great Internet fodder when you see it?

Hardware Removal

Today, I see the bone doctor for my pre-op appointment, and tomorrow, he is going to fix my little problem of setting off metal detectors.  In six weeks, I should be my completely whole and natural self...no screws, no plates, no holes in my bones.

Slowly but Surely...

Derby started back up a couple of weeks ago, and I have skated every practice. It's a good thing I broke my left ankle, because I can't skate clockwise. All that hardware must be a little too rigid for me to catch that edge. No problems going the right way, though...just need to build that endurance back up.

Plans are to avoid contact as long as the hardware is still in, but Sunday night, I picked on one of our referees and almost knocked him off the rink with a solid shoulder check. I couldn't help it...he was coming out of the corner without crossing over and getting in my way...my body aches to hit something. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to contain it. June is so far away.

Random Things

Creeping Beauty tagged me, so here's 10 random things about me. I'm going to stick with the facts instead of my idiosyncrasies...

1. I detest my current job, yet my library continually has the highest scores of any department for student satisfaction with services. I guess I'm pretty good at faking it.

2. I have worked in many different types of libraries, but never a public library. Thank God!

3. If I had to choose between being a rodeo volunteer and playing derby and choosing one would mean losing the other for life, then I would choose rodeo.

4. I would have tried out for banked track derby in Austin when I finished playing football if I had not gotten pregnant. And I was living in Houston at the time.

5. I played tight end for a full season but only caught 2 passes because my skinny ass was too busy filling in as right tackle for the fat linewomen that couldn't move their feet fast enough to block.

6. I completed an application for Survivor in 2001 and never sent it in because I tore my ACL. One of these days, I WILL BE on a reality show (ok, that might never be a FACT...whatever).

7. I served 417 people at my wedding. I'm talking about plates of food, you pervs.

8. I dated a guy that was shorter than me for way too long.

9. I skated in a department store commercial when I was around 10 (along with my sister).

10. My grandparents had a vacation home in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, so for several wonderful years of my young life, my family skied for Thanksgiving and Spring Break. Oh how I miss that!

I'm not tagging anyone specifically, but if you feel like doing this, go right ahead and return the favor of a few seconds of amusement.

Dangerous Hobbies

One of my husband's favorite arguments for continuing his most time-consuming hobby is the slim chance that he will be injured (as opposed to the high probability that I will be injured if I continue mine). Friday evening, I was sending him off on another hunting weekend when his hunting buddies asked me if I was going to continue playing roller derby. I replied that I had every intention of doing so if at all possible, and my husband made the usual unsupportive quip. Of course, I told him he was more than welcome to get back in the car and never go hunting again, and he played his favorite argument card. My husband tells me he never gets hurt at the deer lease while I'm staring at his friend that dragged him down the road dangling by his ankle from the back of a jeep. Oh, really?

Well, that conversation must have jinxed him, because this Sunday, he came home with a gash on his wrist that really needs stitches. While I'm truly concerned about his injury, I can't help but gloat a little inside.

Me-ouch!

Nobody out there has come forward with video or pictures of my foot flopping around on the end of my leg, so I must link to someone else's video. This is EXACTLY what my ankle looked like when I broke it, minus the roller skate pulling my foot further down. And my leg was not that hairy YET.

(Comments came from exact same post on myspace.)
